Hey, this is Joel and welcome to Phrasal Verb Time. The phrasal verbs that I want to talk to you about right now are “turn up” and “turn down.”
Now, these are going to be used mainly in the context of the volume on the TV, for example. Or maybe music that you’re listening to. So if you want to tell someone to “raise” the volume, to make it louder, you say, “Turn up the volume.” So, if you’re watching TV, you can turn up the volume. Or, “turn down” the volume – make it quieter.
So, what are some other ways you can say this? You could also say, “Turn it up” or “Turn it down.” So the full way would be to say, “Turn up the volume” or “Turn down the volume.” Or you could say, “Turn it up” or “Turn it down.” “Turn it up” makes it louder. “Turn it down” makes it quieter.
You could say, “Turn up the TV.” “Turn up the music” Or, “Turn down the TV.” “Turn down the music” “Turn the music up.” “Turn the music down.”
Well, I hope that that was helpful for you. You could also say, “Raise the volume” or “Make it louder,” but they don’t really sound that good. If you want to sound natural and fluent, you would say, “Turn up the volume” or “Turn down the volume.” Or “Turn up the TV.” “Turn down the TV.” “Turn it up.” “Turn it down.”
