Hi, I’m Joel. I’m from the United States and I teach conversational English on Skype.

Right now I want to talk to you about a useful word, and the word is “tissue.” So what’s a tissue? It’s a soft, paper cloth that you can use to blow your nose. But there is another word that you can use instead of tissue. That word is “Kleenex.”

Now, the word “tissue” is kind of a generic term to refer to any kind of brand that makes these paper cloths that you use for blowing your nose. But Kleenex is the most popular brand. Here’s a box right here. And because they’re so popular, we use the word “Kleenex” instead of tissue. Not all of the time. Maybe half the time we say tissue and half of the time we say Kleenex. But it doesn’t matter even if it’s not technically a Kleenex. It can be a tissue from another company, but someone might still call it a Kleenex anyway.

So, you could say, “Pass me a Kleenex, please.” Or, “Do you have any Kleenex?” Or, “I need some Kleenex.” But it’s perfectly fine to say the same thing with the word “tissue.” “I need a tissue, please.” “Can you pass me a tissue?”

So, I hope that that was useful for you. And next time you’re talking and you want to say the word tissue… If you want to switch things up a little bit, have some variety, you can use the word Kleenex instead.
